Agriculture in the former German Southwest Africa, 1935

Land reclamation in the agriculture area of Osona in the former protectorate of German Southwest Africa. After the laborious deforestation of a tract of acacia forest, the land is plowed for the cultivation of potatoes and tobacco. Motorized pumps pump water from the plowed land and after this is done the ground can be better leveled. The trouble it takes to wring cultivated land out of the forest is attested to by the fact that, on average, it takes one year to produce one hectare of arable land
