Alexander von Humboldt at an academic meeting

This painting represents a gathering of great scholars of science and art during the reign of Maximilian II. The focus is on the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, who is introduced to the assembly by the presidents of the two Munich academies, Justus von Liebig and Wilheilm von Kaulbach. At Liebig, who stands at Humboldt's right. line up the philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, the architect and painter Friedrich von Thiersch, the architect, painter and writer Leo von Klenze, the painter Johann Emil Rudolf Hermann and the Catholic theologian Ignaz Doellinger. In the background are the optician and physicist Joseph von Fraunhofer, the theologian, pedagogue, historian and journalist Lorenz von Westenrieder and the politician Johann Georg Lori. Kaulbach is followed by Karl Ritter and Doennings, then Leopold von Ranke, the poet Emanuel Geibel, the publisher Wolfgang Lachner and the painter Wilhelm von Kobell, behind them the sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler, the lyricist August von Platen-Hallermuende and the church painter Johann Baptist Baader.
