American policeman during a strike with tear gas equipment

An American policeman with gas mask, steel helmet and gas pistol during a strike in the harbor of Seattle. The police also used tear gas. The strike hit most harbors on the American West Coast. It began on May 9, 1934 and lasted until July 31. The workers were striking for a stronger position of the unions and worker representatives, for higher wages and shorter working hours. They finally agreed to a mediation
