Apollo and Daphne
The painting of the Rococo artist Antoine Pesne (1683-1757) shows the Greek god of prophecy and the arts Apollo, son of Zeus and Leto, with the nymph Daphne. While running away from Apollo's love, Daphne's mother Gaia (Earth) enveloped her and turned her into a laurel tree - Daphne = Laurel. The event established the important role of the laurel in the cult of Apollo
