British steamer in the port of Montevideo. At the rear a gun can be seen. Against the threat of submarines, cargo ships were armed with guns. The guns were a danger to the boats since the submarines appeared to approach freighters before the move to the unrestricted submarine war, in order to check them or to sink them with the guns
