Assassination of Victor Emmanuel III in Milan, 1928

On the morning of April 12, 1928, Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy, was driving through Piazzale Giulio Cesare in Milan towards the fair. The train was surrounded by numerous people paying their respects to their king when a bomb, which had been placed under the cast-iron foundation of a street lamp, exploded. The attack missed the king, but killed 20 people and injured numerous others. The picture shows the explosion site with the hole at the base of the lantern. In the background, wounded are being recovered by firefighters
