Benito Mussolini, ousted dictator of Italy and reinstated as head of state of the Italian Social Republic, stands elevated in this painting and speaks to a companion. He is surrounded by his faithful, who continue to follow him. The photograph was taken in Milan in April 1945, before Mussolini's flight from the city on April 25. He is standing in Via Rovello, corner of Via Dante, in front of the building and main house of the Legione Autonoma Mobile Ettore Muti'. Today it houses the Piccolo Teatro di Milano
