British artillery on the march towards Khartoum which was occupied by the Mahdists. The Mahdi uprising between 1881 and 1898 was a rebellion against Anglo-Egyptian rule in the Sudanese provinces. Only in 1898 did the British succeed in finally destroying the Mahdi's dominion
