This undated photo shows a camp of Amundsen's expedition with tents and sledge carriages in the middle of a vast desert of ice and snow. Roald Amundsen (born 1872) a Norwegian polar explorer reached the South Pole as the first man before his competitor R. F. Scott. In June 1928, he had a plane crash during a rescue mission for the missing Umberto Nobile at the North Pole
