Our photo, taken on the Western front at Verdun in 1916, shows a German prisoner, who is taken to the rear by a French soldier through the barbed wire. Presumably moviestill. For most soldiers on both sides, captivity meant a salvation. Given the high losses and the war's duration, soldiers had to be prepared for a serious injury or even death. To fall into captivity meant at least to stay alive. 01.01.1916-31.12.1916
