Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, the papal Secretary of State upon his arrival in new York on board the ship S. S. Conte di Savoia. The Cardinal, whose reason for the trip was the activities of Father Charles E. Coughlin supposedly, received the press in lobby of the ship but answered no questions. In 1939 Cardinal Pacelli was elected Pope (Pius XII)
