Caricature of the new Viceroy of India, Field Marshal Archibald Percival Wavell. The accompanying caption says: India is not a problem - India is a field of activity! Wavell as Commander of the British Middle East Command (1939-41), at the beginning achieved indeed military successes against the Italian troops in Libya and East Africa, but suffered heavy defeats after the intervention of the German Africa Corps (February 1941) under Rommel. In July 1941 he became Commander in Chief in India, after the Japanese entered the war (December 1941) became Allied Commander in Southeast Asia (till 1942). Between 1943-47 he was the Viceroy of India
