Cartoon about assignats
The assignats were issued after the French Revolution, these money orders representing the value of confiscated domains owned by the church or nobles, from 1790 caused a quick hyperinflation. On 21 May 1797 they were declared invalid and devalued entirely. The cartoon is amused at the fools who had paid good gold for this paper money
