Castle Marienburg in Gdansk

This is a historical postcard of Schloss Marienburg ( English: Malbork Castle) of the company Gottheil and Sohn from the series Danzig and surroundings. Malbork Castle was built as an Ordensburg (fortress) of the Teutonic Order in the 13th century. For a long time, the castle served as the residence of the Polish kings, then it belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia and after the Second World War, became again a part of Poland. During the Second World War, the Wehrmacht had used the castle as a fortress and during an attack of the Soviet army large parts of the castle were destroyed. The castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the largest brick building in Europe. The castle was built in the style of the Brick Gothic and the later additions in the style of the Brick Renaissance. Famous and eponymous is the gigantic portrait of the Virgin Mary made of glass mosaic on the Pfaffenturm
