This painting is a portrait of Charles Theodore, Elector of Bavaria and Count Palatine. He was devoted to music and arts. In 1781 he favored the premiere of Mozart's Idomeneo in Munich. Under his reign, there were enormous cultural, economic and infrastructural developments in southern Germany
