Christiaan Eijkman, Dutch hygienist

Christiaan Eijkman (11.08.1858-05.11.1930), Dutch hygienist. He researched in Indonesia (Dutch-East-Indies) the cause of Beriberi, a deadly nerve-disease and based it on malnutrition. With that he started the beginnings of Vitamin-Research. In 1929 he and the Englishman Frederick Gowland Hopkins were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for their research on the BeriBeri
