Clashes - victory celebration in the Piaza del Popolo
Clashes and riots broke out in Rome in 1924 on November 4, the day of the Victory Day celebrations. The picture shows a violent confrontation in the Piazza del Popolo. General Giuseppe Garibaldi the Younger was coming from the Porta del Popolo with some red shirts when a detachment of out-of-town fascists attacked them. In the centre of the picture is the smoke of fired pistols, whereupon the crowd fled. The Fontana del Nettuno can be seen in the background. Victory Day commemorated Italy's armistice with Austria-Hungary on 4 November 1918
