Colonel General Nikolai Erastovich Berzarin (center) with his staff in front of the ruin of the Reichstag building. Berzarin became the first city commander of Berlin and campaigned for the improvement of living conditions, cleanup and the revival of cultural life. As city commander, he held the highest judicial, civilian and military position in Berlin. Shortly thereafter, he died in an accident
