Communist May Day demonstration in the Lustgarten, 1931

This photograph shows the May Day demonstration of Communists in the Lustgarten. In the middle of the picture is a ship made of papier mache, which bears the inscription Panzerkreuzer (armored cruiser). The armored cruiser program of the Kriegsmarine, which envisaged the construction of three battleships, led to fierce attacks of the Communist Party against the SPD because they had led their Reichstag election campaign with the slogan No cruiser, but then, as Cabinet approved the construction. It was a political farce, which inflicted serious damage to the reputation of the SPD
