Debris in the embattled Cholm, 1942

As a result of the constant artillery fire by the Soviet Red Army against the German Wehrmacht in Kholm, the entire town was destroyed. In most cases no stone was left upon another. During the encirclement battle of Kholm the Kampfgruppe Scherer successfully defended the town for 105 days. (A photo of the Propaganda Company (PK) by war correspondent Richard Muck, who flew into the pocket at the beginning of March)
