Destruction of the Irmin column, 772
This copper engraving shows the destruction of the Irminsul (or Erminsaeule) on the Eresburg on the Diemel, a sacred Saxon monument, in the course of the Saxon Wars of Charles the Great. The aim of the Saxon Wars was the compulsory conversion of the Saxons. The engraving comes from the workshop of Jacques-Philippe Le Bas / Lebas after a drawing by Jean-Michel Moreau le Jeune from Paris around 1780
