Earthquake in Lisbon, 1755
A contemporary engraving shows the destruction of the Portuguese capital of Lisbon by the earthquake of 1755. As at many earthquakes a fire broke out due to the tremors that destroyed many houses spared by the earthquake. Survivors who tried to escape on the coast were killed by an almost 8m high tidal wave that was triggered by the earthquake
