An Election Entertainment by William Hogarth, 18th century
An Election Entertainment by the English draughtsman William Hogarth shows the general system of bribery and graft that was common in the English parliamentary election system of the time. Since only a relatively small proportion of citizens had the right to vote and this was dependent on financial and tax power as well as social status, it was common practice to influence the election with bribes, election gifts and the purchase of votes.
