Empress Elisabeth of Austria

Elisabeth Eugenie Amalie (also known as Sissi, 1837-1898), Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary. The daughter of Duke Maximilian of Bavaria married Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I. in 1854. She was highly engaged in working out a compensation with Hungary. After the death of Crown Prince Rudolf (1889), she withdrew from life at court in Vienna and travelled extensively. In Geneva, she was stabbed by the Italian anarchist Luigi Luccheni. The painting by Franz Xaver Winterhaller, which shows Sissi with her hair let down, was put up in the study of the Emperor Franz Joseph I
