Erwin Rommel was awarded the Pour le Merite, Germany's highest war medal, in the First World War for his courage in the face of the enemy. At the time he was the Lieutenant Colonel of the Wuerttemberg mountain battalion with Major Sproesser (left). The image was taken at the Grappa mountains in the Dolomites during the campaign on the Austrian-Italian front
