Excavation of Dur-Sharrukin, 1934
In the course of the Iran expedition of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago in the year 1934 the gateway to the capital Dur-Sharrukin erected by the King Sargon of Assyria, near present day Khorsabad, was excavated. The gate is flanked by two winged creatures, that bear a human head on the body of a bull. Following each was a winged human figure that sprinkled holy water.
