The unfortunate outcome of the Spanish-American war resulted in the loss of the Philippines for Spain. Shortly thereafter, the Caroline Islands and Mariana Islands were acquired by the German Reich through a purchase agreement from Spain. The facsimile on the last page shows the agreement signed in Madrid on June 30, 1899
