As the leader of the Communist uprising in Central Germany in March 1921, Max Hoelz was sentenced to life imprisonment after the suppression of the coup, but pardoned in 1928. On April 24, 1929, he wanted to talk in the Festhalle in Karlsruhe, but together with his followers was involved in a roughhouse with many present SA men.
