First tramway in the world, Berlin, Germany

The first tramway in the world in Berlin. In the background the Main Military Academy of Lichterfelde. Berlin can take the credit that the electric railway operation began here. On 16 May 1881 Werner Siemens opened in Lichterfelde the first electric tram that ran between the Main Military Academy and the Lichterfelde railway station. This train travelled without catenary wire. It received power from both rails so that if someone touched both rails simultaneously they got a 110 volt electric shock. Such small accidents should have been however not too common
