The first chief of the general staff of the Blue Party communicates with his attacking troops via flag signals, which are forwarded by a signalman (centre of the picture) with the help of the flag alphabet. The adjutant follows through his binoculars whether the receiver confirms the signals through his signalman or demands repetition
