Franz Behounek on the ice floe, 1928
Franz Behounek, Czech professor and member of the Polar expedition of Umberto Nobile. After the airship Italia had crashed on the flight back from the pole near Spitzbergen, Behounek is caught with other expedition members on an ice floe. After around 50 days, the Russian icebreaker Karasin picked him up. The skeleton in the background is from a hunted polar bear, who served as food to the team
