Funeral procession for Ludwig III, 1921

During the funeral ceremony for King Ludwig III of Bavaria, who died on October 18th, the funeral procession moves past the Propylaea on Koenigsplatz. The funeral procession was made up of clergy and the Munich Guglmaenner'. Since the time of the Plague, the Guglmaenner served as symbols of death and as a reminder to the living. Delegations of Guglmaenner always accompanied the funeral ceremonies of the Bavarian monarchs at the head of the coffin, and wore black monk's habits, their head and faces covered with a black hood called a gugl
