Georges Clemenceau (1841-1929), French politician and Prime Minister (1906-1909, 1917-1920). At the peace negotiations, he sought to weaken Germany and to make the Rhine the military frontier of France. When he was defeated in the presidential elections in January 1920, he retired from politics
