German cruiser Emden
The German cruiser Emden was after a successful war effort so badly damaged by the Australian cruiser Sydney at the Cocos Islands, that the commander, Captain Karl von Mueller, put it on base. The photo shows a sailor of the landing crew of the Emden, that should destroy an Allied radio station on the Cocos Islands. It managed to capture a schooner, after the fall of the Emden, and to return after a week-long odyssey to Germany
