The surviving sailors of the Emden as prisoners of war in 1916 in Fort Salvatore on the island of Malta. The Emden was after a successful war effort so badly damaged on 9.11.1914 by the Australian cruiser Sydney at the Cocos Islands, that its commander, Captain Karl von Mueller, put it on base
