German Infantrymen at the Eastern Front, 1942

An infantry platoon is taking a break during the advance in the southern sector of the Eastern Front in the Donets Basin. Contrary to common knowledge on Russian tactics of the previous year, the Russian troops now abandoned huge parts of their terrain during the German move on Stalingrad and towards the Caucasus. In consequence, German soldiers spent a lot of their time on long marches. The picture was taken on July 27, 1942
