German Kaiser Wilhelm II writes at his desk in the Park of the Achilleion Palace on Corfu. The Achilleion Palace with its impressive parks and its old bridge which led to the sea, was built in 1890/91 for Empress Elisabeth of Austria by the Italian architect Carita in the neo-Renaissance style. She named the building after Achilles, her favorite hero from Greek mythology. After the death of Empress Elisabeth in 1907, Kaiser Wilhelm II purchased the summer palace and vacationed there until 1914
