German soldiers on the airfield in Kholm, 1942
The airfield in Cholm became snow-free only in May. Two Wehrmacht soldiers inspect a gun (probably a 10.5 cm Leichtgeschuetz 40); next to it lies a fallen Soviet soldier. During the encirclement battle of Cholm the Kampfgruppe Scherer successfully defended the town for 105 days.
