German soldiers check a provision bomb, 1942
Soldiers are looking at a cracked provision bomb. Since the parachute did not open, the bomb split on impact. During the encirclement battle of Kholm the Kampfgruppe Scherer successfully defended the town for 105 days. (A photo of the Propaganda Company (PK) by war correspondent Richard Muck, who flew into the pocket at the beginning of March)
