German soldiers warming up in Kholm, 1942
A petrol barrel converted into an oven serves the freezing Wehrmacht soldiers as the only source of heat in the embattled Kholm. During the encirclement battle of Cholm the Kampfgruppe Scherer successfully defended the town for 105 days.
