Gouache painting by Willem Vrelant, 1483

One of the oldest representations of an author can be found in the gouache painting on parchment, entitled Der Autor ueberreicht sein Werk dem Grande Batard de Boulonge ('The author presents his work to the Grand Batard de Bourgogne'). The duke on the raised chair in the middle points to his left to the kneeling writer who is holding his book in his hands. On the far left is the duke's scribe working in his writing room
