: Great fire in Passau, 1680

Great fire in Passau, 1680

This copperplate engraving is a contemporary depiction illustrating a major fire in Passau on 29 July 1680. The fire, which originated in the Marienberg convent, reduced large parts of the old town to rubble. The depiction is based on an original by Matthaus Merian from 1645, and expands it to include the flames and smoke. On the right, the Veste Oberhaus towers over the Danube and Ilz
