Group of Republican fighters in Irun, Basque Country, 1936

Photo of a group of fighters on the side of the government troops in the Basque border town of Irun (France), probably in the summer of 1936. The fighters wear different uniform pieces (breeches and field tunics) or are partly dressed in civilian clothes. They are armed with light weapons, especially carabiners and revolvers. On the left, a Teniente (lieutenant), probably the commander of the unit, rests on a walking stick. In the middle poses a medic with a red cross armband. She is armed with a revolver. Some soldiers wear alpargatas, simple cotton shoes with braided hemp soles
