The head of the monk Guthlac is being shaved
The later English Saint Guthlac is tonsured by his bishop in Repton Abbey. Behind the bishop is the scribe with a book, right an abbess with two nuns (drawing from the Guthlac Roll from the end of the 12th century). The shaving of the head, originally the sign of the slaves in ancient Rome, was a private ceremony in the Western Church of the 7th century, at the admission of a young man in the monastery
