In the autumn of 1940 the German cruiser Deutschland was renamed Luetzow (after Prussian General Adolf von Luetzow) and reclassified as a heavy cruiser. It took part in the occupation of Norway in April 1940 after a general overhaul at the Gdansk shipyard. The bridge and the superstructures were completely redesigned
