Helium storeroom in Lakehurst, 1938

A storage area of bottles with helium gas. The helium gas will be used for filling airships. The bottles prepared in this photo are intended for the Zeppelin USS Akron. The USA, which has a monopoly on the production of the gas, uses helium solely as the fuel for their airships. One year after the accident of the German airship the Hindenburg in May 1937 in Lakehurst, the German Captain Hugo Eckner tried in vain to bring helium from the USA for German airships. Considering the persecution of the Jews in the 3rd Reich, the American public demanded No helium gas for Nazi Zeppelins, the American government gave in to this pressure and refused deliveries to Germany on political grounds
