The NSDAP propaganda in the Voelkischer Beobachter drew the loner and idealist as a compliant tool of the British Secret Service. Even under torture, Elser remained true to his statement that he had acted alone. The conspiracy theory also included an involvement of Otto Strasser. Elser's condemnation ensured that the role to which he was entitled was only revealed by historians decades after the end of the Second World War
