Many unemployed people lived with their families in run-down tenement houses and modest cellar rooms with deficient sanitary facilities, which were shared by up to 25 parties. During the Great Depression, is some cases they were starving for days, weeks, months and years. New clothes were not affordable and often there was nothing else but stale bread.
