The Igel Column

The Roman column in Igel near Trier is a particularly well-preserved monument from the Roman period. It is next to the Drususstein (Drusus stone) of Mainz, the only Roman funerary monument north of the Alps that was preserved above ground. The monument is 23m high and is made up of red sandstone. It is decorated with many reliefs. There are scenes from the everyday and working life of the cloth merchants, as well as from mythology. On the top is an eagle, the village was named after it. At the same time, it was an advertisement for the cloth business of the Secundier in Trier. A reconstruction of the column is in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Trier
