Italian soldiers stand in front of the Prussian sentry box of the barrack in Marienburg. Due to the Treaty of Versailles which entered into force on 10 January 1920, the majority of West Prussia, the so-called Polish corridor, had to be transferred to Poland without a referendum. For the remaining parts of West Prussia, referendums, foreseen for 11. July 1920, should decide about the destination in the German Reich. As a result, only a few located districts of the former government district Marienwerder, east of Nogat and Vistula remained in Germany, including the district of Marienburg
